On 9/17/01, the Telegraph newspaper reported that two senior experts wth the Israeli intelligence agency the Mossad took a trip to Washington, DC the month before 9/11 to warn the CIA and FBI of a large terrorist cell of up to 200 strong that was planning a coming attack. Officials said they warned the US agencies of imminent "large-scale terrorist attacks on highly visible targets on the American mainland." A senior Israeli security official told the Telegraph, "They had no specific information about what was being planned but linked the plot to Osama bin Laden," but then told US intel that they should suspect Iraqi involvement as well.
In response to this claim, an administration official in Washington stated, "If this is true then the refusal to take it seriously will mean heads will roll. It is quite credible that the CIA might not heed a Mossad warning: it has a history of being overcautious about Israeli information."
The highly respected German daily, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung [FAZ] , reported two days after the attack that both the US and Israeli intelligence agencies were warned by the Echelon surveillance system about the attacks at least 3 months prior to September 11th.
